The municipality of Llers has a strategic location in the Empordà, it dominates the plain and is close to the passes that cross the Pyrenees. For this reason, its population has played a significant role in many wars and invasions throughout history. The castle is located in the upper part of the old town of Llers. It was largely destroyed due to the explosion of the gunpowder, located in the parish church, by the republican troops during the retreat in 1939. Today you can visit the remains of the castle of Llers consisting of a tower and a rectangular walled enclosure. Remains of several rooms are preserved inside the wall. It is a very homogeneous construction, built during the 13th century following the traditional Romanesque model, with the central tower and the walled enclosure surrounding it and which was restored between 1981 and 2013.
