View of the Gdańsk waterfront and the Crane

Highlight • Viewpoint

There are many beautiful houses in Gdańsk's Old Town. Gdańsk has many sights, most of which are located in the Main Town (Głowne Miasto), which lies south of the Old Town. Everything is within a few hundred meters of each other.

Long Street (Ul. Długa) and the adjoining Long Market (Długi Targ) are home to most of the sights and mark the main street of the Main Town and also the Royal Route in Gdańsk. This area, like Mariacka Street (ul. Mariacka), which runs parallel to it, and the river promenade running across it, is entirely pedestrianized.

As part of the revitalization of the historic Granary Island (Wyspa Spichrzów) in Gdańsk, a new pedestrian bridge over the Motława River will open at the end of July. The swing bridge connects Granary Island with the Long Bridge, the waterfront promenade of the historic Old Town.

The 57-meter-long and 4.5-meter-wide structure provides access to the northern part of the island, whose buildings were almost completely destroyed during World War II. New housing developments and hotels have been under construction there for several years. Plans also include the modernization and expansion of the adjacent Marina Gdańsk. In addition, the former Milk Can Bridge (most Stągiewny) is to be restored to its pre-World War II appearance. Until its destruction, it served as a drawbridge directly in front of the Milk Can Gate. The two bastions of the Milk Can Gate, which were also destroyed, were rebuilt in the 1980s.

"The Golden Gate (Polish: Złota Brama; German: Langgasser Tor) in Gdańsk (former German name: Danzig), Poland, is one of the most notable tourist attractions of the city.

It was created in 1612–14 in place of a 13th-century gothic gate, the Brama Długouliczna (Long Street Gate). It is located at one end of Long Lane (ulica Długa; German: Langgasse), where, together with Brama Wyżynna (German: Hohes Tor = High Gate) and Wieża Więzienna (German: Stockturm = Prison Tower), it forms a part of the old city fortifications." St. Nicholas Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The first St. Nicholas Church was probably built around 1185. Starting in 1227, the Dominicans took over the church and built a monastery next to it. The present church dates back to 1384 and has been rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries. After the Dominicans were expelled in 1834, the monastery buildings were demolished, and the church was not returned to the Dominicans until 1945.

The woman lane is noted in the tourist guides in the first place. Probably because of its uniqueness in Gdansk. Here are also many dealers with amber jewelry to be found. The gargoyles and the frescoes on the terraces are worth a look.

Great Armoury (Wielka Zbrojownia), Gdańsk

Highlight • Historical Site

The Great Armoury (Polish: Wielka Zbrojownia) in Gdańsk was built between 1600 and 1609 and was probably designed by the architect Anton van Obberghen.

Table of Contents

The armory, which served as a weapons storehouse, is a typical example of Flemish Mannerism in Gdańsk. The facade on both sides of the building is divided into gables: four on the Holzmarkt (Wood Market) and two on the eastern side facing Jopengasse. Two towers flank the gables. The tips of the gables are decorated with bronze sculptures of exploding cannonballs, clearly indicating the building's purpose.[1] Two portals bearing the coat of arms of Gdańsk are symmetrically integrated into the gables on either side. A niche forms the central element of the facade, containing a statue of Athena. In this niche, the builders inscribed the dates of construction and renovation (1605, 1768, 1887).

In front of the building is a well that was connected to the armory in the basement.

The armory's rooms are now used by the Gdańsk Academy of Fine Arts. From the 1920s until about 2007, the ground floor also housed shops.
