Almadén Mining Park

Highlight • Historical Site

The Almadén Mining Park is the living heritage of the two thousand years of Almadén exploitation. After the closure of the mining activity in 2003, the oldest mines in the world whose activity has been maintained to this day, show their secrets.
Mercury, the living silver of the Romans, is shown in the Park in all its aspects, the extraction of its mineral, cinnabar, mercury sulfide, its transformation in metallurgical furnaces, its physical and chemical properties, its uses and, of course, its eternal history.
The facilities of the Mining Park, the shafts, buildings and facilities are the heart of the Spanish assets registered on the list of World Heritage Sites under the name of Mercury Heritage. Almaden and Idrija.

Royal Hospital of the Miners of San Rafael

Highlight • Historical Site

It is an unusual building built in 1755 and which has been a miners' hospital from 1774 to 1975. Later, after a few years of abandonment, it was rehabilitated at the beginning of the 21st century to show its dependencies. In addition, a museum space was created with three rooms: the first dedicated to the history of this building, the second, which is responsible for showing the process of mercury metallurgy and its evolution, and the third reflects the life and customs of the local and regional population. It was declared B.I.C. in 1992.

Miner's Monument

Highlight • Monument

Sculptural work that honors all the miners of Almadén and the region, chosen by popular subscription and made by Leovigildo Gallardo Blanco from Almaden.
The Monument to the Miner represents the history of more than two thousand years, the hard and sacrificial work of the miner and the history of a people; the rebellion against the exploitation of man for a miserable salary and the testimony of a region that jointly achieved the objectives it set itself. Opened in 1996.

Almadén

Highlight • Historical Site

In the Alcudia Valley lies Almadén, a town linked to mining since ancient times, dyed with the reddish cinnabar of its cave paintings. The Romans opened up this land to extract the precious metal coveted in the empire as a dye, cosmetic or ointment. Since those times and despite the vagaries of exploitation or demand, Almadén has produced a third of the mercury consumed by humanity.
The Almadén Mining Park offers us a trip to the interior of one of the oldest mines in the world. The park is completed with museums, interpretation centres and interesting displays of industrial archaeology. The Old School of Mine Foremen, created in the 18th century for the Study of Subterranean Geometry and Mineralogy. The House of the Superintendence located next to the mine allowed for greater control of it, of Baroque style only the enclosure remains. The San Rafael Miners' Hospital houses the historical archive of the Almadén Mines.

Chillón is a small town on the valley road that leads to Capilla in the province of Badajoz. As you cycle through the city, you should stop at the Gothic church of San Juan Bautista attached to the old Castillo de los Donceles with its beautiful round tower.
