Staré Město pod Sněžníkem Town Square and Clock Tower

Highlight • Settlement

There are eight municipalities named Staré Město in the Czech Republic, but only one of them is surrounded by a ring of mountains like Staré Město pod Sněžníkem. The natural dominant of the region is the 1424-meter-high Králický Sněžník with its ridges, which can boldly compete with the nearby Jeseníky Mountains in both wild and romantic beauty, the steepness of their slopes and the height of their individual peaks. The Rychlebské Mountains reach an altitude of 1125 meters above sea level with Mount Smrk, and in the immediate vicinity of Staré Město there are hills and plains with an average height of 750 meters. The lowest elevation of 465 meters above sea level is at the mouth of the Krupá River into the Morava River. The height range of the Staroměstsko is therefore considerable - 959 meters.
For over 700 years, the picturesque valley of the Krupá River on the border of the Králický Sněžník, Rychlebské Mountains and Jeseníky Mountains has been dominated by a typical mountain town – Staré Město pod Sněžníkem. It was originally called Goldek, which means Golden Corner or Golden Horn. The name Staré Město only began to be used in the 15th century. The foundation of Staré Město dates back to the period of mining colonization of northern Moravia in the second half of the 13th and early 14th centuries. It was also the original seat of the later Kolštejn estate, in whose mortgaged possession we meet with leading noble families: the lords of Lipá (14th century), of Valdštejn (first half of the 15th century), of Zvole (second half of the 15th and 16th centuries), of Vrbno (turn of the 16th and 17th centuries), of Petřvald (beginning of the 17th century) and of Liechtenstein (half of the 17th to half of the 19th century).
