Rabbit Blanket Lake

Highlight • Lake

Rabbit Blanket Lake is located on Highway 17 (Trans-Canada Highway); on its northeastern shore is the campsite of the same name in the Provincial Park. The lake is fed by the South Old Woman River; this mountain stream drains further north into Lake Superior. The lake shore is the starting point of the short Rabbit Blanket Trail and the challenging Peat Mountain Trail.

Peat Mountain Lookout

Highlight • Viewpoint

The viewpoint at Peat Mountain is located at an altitude of approx. 500 meters. The views extend as far as Lake Superior in the west and over the wooded hills in the east. To the south, at the foot of Peat Mountain, lies the upper valley of the South Old Women River with Peat Lake in the headwaters of the stream.
Here, many years ago, there was a larger lake that dried up many years ago. Large areas became a wetland where Sphagnum moss spread and deposited to form peat.

Foam Lake Cliff Lookout

Highlight • Viewpoint

A variant of the Peat Mountain Trail leads up to an approximately 100-meter-high rock cliff on the mountain ridge above Foam Lake. During our visit on June 1, 2026, we had a view down to the magnificently located lake; to the west, we can recognize the vast dimensions of Lake Superior.

Foam Lake

Highlight • Lake

The Foam Lake is located at about 420 meters altitude, nestled in a dense forest landscape. We reach the lake shore on our circular hike on the Peat Mountain Trail. In the shade of the trees, we take a break and enjoy the silence by the lake.
The lake is named after the organic foam that often forms on the lake shore.

About 100 meters north of Foam Lake, the Peat Mountain Trail passes by a wetland. A beaver dam is holding back its outflow; this has caused a small lake to develop.
