View of Antequera and the Peña de los Enamorados

Highlight • Viewpoint

The view of Antequera and the Peña de los Enamorados is one of the most impressive scenes in the region – a harmonious blend of city, landscape, and legend.

From a vantage point like the Alcazaba or the Church of Santa María la Mayor, Antequera stretches out before you: a sea of white houses, narrow streets, and reddish-tiled roofs, gently nestling into the fertile plains of the Vega de Antequera. Church towers and domes rise between the buildings, reflecting the golden light of the sun.

On the horizon rises the mysterious Peña de los Enamorados – the "Rock of the Lovers." Its shape is reminiscent of the profile of a sleeping face, serenely watching over the landscape. According to legend, two lovers, a Moor and a Christian, once threw themselves to their deaths here because their love was forbidden – a symbol of eternal fidelity and tragic passion.

The Alcazaba of Antequera

Highlight • Castle

The castle-fortress of Antequera offers the best views of the city. Although the fortification dates from the Muslim period, the construction was probably carried out on Roman remains. It can be visited between 10:00 and 15:00, except on public holidays.

Mirador Diego Monea

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Mirador de Diego Monea, also called the Mirador de Diego Fernández, is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Andalusia. From here, a sweeping view opens up over the so-called Arco Calizo Central, the central limestone arch of Andalusia, which includes the Sierra del Torcal. The striking rock formations, created by millions of years of erosion, form one of the most impressive karst landscapes in Europe. The viewpoint is located on the road to the Torcal Alto Visitor Center and is accessible by bike – although the route is steep, it offers magnificent panoramic views and is a worthwhile destination, especially for experienced cyclists.

A stele at the site commemorates Diego Fernández, to whom the mirador was dedicated in 1993. The Andalusian Environmental Agency officially names the viewpoint "Mirador Diego Monea."

The spot itself is ideal for taking a break after a challenging bike ride and enjoying the impressive landscape, with sweeping views all the way down to the Antequera plains. The Mirador de Diego Monea uniquely combines exercise with nature—a place where cyclists and nature lovers alike can experience the quiet grandeur of the Torcal.

Royal Road of Charles III

Highlight • Trail

The Camino Real de Carlos III near Antequera was part of the great royal road built in the 18th century under King Charles III to improve the connection between Madrid and Andalusia. In the region around Antequera, the route ran through a particularly scenic area – along the edge of the Torcal de Antequera, between hills, olive groves, and limestone cliffs. At that time, the route served as an important trade and travel link between the Guadalquivir Valley, Antequera, and the Málaga coast.

Today, some sections of the historic Camino Real near Antequera are still recognizable and marked as cycle paths. You can cycle along these old paths through a typical Andalusian cultural landscape of grain fields, olive trees, and whitewashed villages. The section that descends from the Torcal de Antequera towards the city is particularly rewarding, offering magnificent views of the Antequera Valley, the Peña de los Enamorados, and the vast plains extending to the Sierra de las Nieves.

The Camino Real was not only a transport link here, but also a symbol of the Enlightenment-style reform spirit of King Charles III, who built roads, post stations, and new villages to develop and modernize Andalusia. Today, the route invites you to hike or cycle along historical trails—between history, nature, and impressive geology.
