Bela I Castle

Highlight • Castle

At the beginning of the 17th century, a new castle with four towers, a central tower and a suspension drawbridge was built in the valley below the Pusta Bela fortress. In 1740, by royal gift, the estate came into the possession of the Erdödy family. The late Renaissance castle 8 is known as Bela I. In a beautiful park near the castle, in the 18th century, the Erdödy family built another castle in the Baroque style, known as Bela II.

After Bela was ruled by the Ivanovs, the Croatian ban Matko Talovec, Ivan Vitovec, the Hungarian-Croatian king Matijaš Korvin, the Hungarian family Pethö de Gerse and the counts Erdödy, 1858. Mr. Bela comes into the possession of Baron Metel Ožegović, a prominent member of the Croatian National Revival. In his time, Bela turned into a place where musical evenings, literary meetings and a place visited by all prominent people of the then Croatia.

Church of Our Lady of Radovan

Highlight • Religious Site

According to tradition, the site of the chapel in Radovan used to be a parish church, older than the one in Margečan. Over time, the parish in Radovan collapsed, and the church became a branch of the parish church in Margečan.

However, this tradition is not entirely true. According to archival documents, on the site of today's chapel once stood the medieval parish church of St. Lawrence. The parish in Lovrečan ceased to exist, and the church then became the regional chapel of the Margečan parish. Visitors placed the chapel in the village of Lovrečan, probably because Lovrečan was a much larger place than Radovan, and even today Lovrečan extends almost to the chapel itself.

The first written mention of this chapel is found in a visitation in 1638. The visitor, Archdeacon Oškoci, noted that the chapel was built with a vaulted sanctuary, and in the nave of the chapel was a wooden painted tabula. There were three altars in it. The choir was wooden and old. The chapel had a high masonry bell tower with one bell. There was a cemetery around the chapel.

Between 1760 and 1765, the old chapel was demolished and a new one built. A great discovery was made during the demolition. A walled statue of the Mother of God was found in the walls of the old chapel. A new chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin was erected at that place. According to a record from 1771, the old chapel of St. Lawrence was not completely demolished, but was incorporated into a new chapel. The chapel of St. was later added to this chapel. Anne so that the chapel has the shape of a cross in the ground plan.

The appearance of today's baroque chapel dates back to the 19th century. It is partly furnished with altars from the same period in the sanctuary, has the remains of older wall paintings with fragmented depictions of the Annunciation, the Meeting of Mary and Elizabeth and the Miracles of Our Lady of Radovanska and a very beautiful wooden altar from the 18th century decorated with numerous figures.

The main, architecturally designed, altar of the church is located under the vault of the sanctuary painted like other parts of the church in the 19th century with the scene of the Annunciation to Mary. It is made of wood, decorated with marble and gilding. The monumentality, the complexity of the architectural composition, and the figural and painting decorations of this altar indicate that it was made by skilled and artistically educated masters.

Of particular interest and value is a wooden statue of Mary with Jesus (found in the wall) in a retable niche. It is a Gothic sculpture, the work of an unknown artist from the early 15th century. Art historians call such sculptures "beautiful Gothic Madonnas". Looking into the distance and the position of the hand indicate that it is a statue of the Mother of God with the name of a signpost.

On the choir of the church there is a beautiful positive with one manual, built in the Rococo style. It was made in 1777 by the Maribor organist Simon Ottonischer. They are a valuable organ monument.

Ivanec Park

Highlight • Natural

Ivanec Park is one of the most beautiful places in Ivanec and an example of beautiful landscape architecture. The once neglected pond and meadow were transformed into an English meadow, thanks to Božidar Kukuljević Sakcinski.

At the entrance to the park there is a flower fountain built in 2006, which serves as a memorial to the real fountain that existed in that place in the last century. The former fountain in Ivanac was made by the artist F. Maruzzi from Zagreb. The recently renovated park now includes a newly built pavilion that attracts guests to various events throughout the year.

Ivanečki Park is considered the most beautiful postcard of the city, and during events, it becomes a particularly vibrant place full of positive energy. The chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary was once located in this area, which Ladislav Kukuljević Sakcinski had built in 1881 as a memorial to his wife. Unfortunately, the chapel was destroyed by lightning in 1961, but its traces still bear witness to the history of this place. Within the park, you can also visit the Visitor Center where you will learn more about the rich history of this area.

Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Ivanec

Highlight • Religious Site

Ivanec parish is mentioned for the first time 1️⃣5️⃣4️⃣7️⃣. year. The reason for the late establishment of the parish is the absence of a parish church, and the reason for this was the ecclesiastical authority of the Ivano-vivi of Belje and their chapel of St. John the Baptist in Ivanec, which existed until 1674.

The parish church of St. Mary Magdalene was built by Ladislav Erdödy and his wife, and it got its present form by rebuilding the older church. 💒
