Göta Canal

Highlight • Structure

Bumped into the Göta Canal more or less by chance on our bike tour through Sweden and cycled along the shore for two days. There are 58 locks, 50 bridges, two trough bridges and five lakes on the canal. A recommendation is definitely to go along the canal at dusk, great atmosphere!

View of Lake Ljungssjön

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Idyllic quiet little road along the Ljungssjön lake. Really hardly any traffic, partly leading through shady forest area. From time to time you can catch a glimpse of the lake.

Göta Hotel

Highlight • Monument

Small, family-run hotel directly on the Kanala from around the beginning of the 20th century. Lovingly furnished, you can hear the fact that it is a wooden building from around the beginning of the 20th century in many corners and on the wooden planks, which is why it's a little hard of hearing :-)

Borensberg Manual Lock

Highlight • Monument

In summer, thousands of boats pass through the locks of the Göta Canal. Here you can experience the spectacle, when enormous volumes of water flow into one of the 58 lock chambers of the Göta Canal. No lock is like the other. Most locks are hydraulically operated today, but in Borensberg and Tåtorp they are still open by hand today.

Homemade ice cream with local products.
Very generous portions. The shop also sells jams, marmalades, caramel candies, and souvenirs.

In Borensberg, the Göta Canal meets the Motala Ström, creating a picturesque setting where water and history intertwine. This is one of the few sections of the canal without a lock, as the natural flow of the river carries boats gently onward. The spot is particularly charming, with the old lock keeper’s cottage, small bridges, and cafés giving it the feel of a living postcard. Long a gathering place for travelers and locals, Borensberg highlights the harmony between the canal’s engineering and the surrounding landscape. Today, it remains a beloved stop for cyclists, boaters, and visitors exploring the heart of Östergötland.

Ljungs Castle

Highlight • Castle

Ljungs Castle is beautifully situated by Lake Ljung and was originally built in 1774 by the von Fersen family. The castle building is well preserved and is considered a good example of the style of the Gustavian era. Today the castle is privately owned, but visitors are welcome (only with a guide).
