Royal Monument at Saltstraumen

Highlight • Monument

The King's Monument at Saltstraumen is a monument erected in 1874 to commemorate the royal visit of Oscar II on June 26, 1873. It stands on the site of a former signal mast intended to facilitate navigation through the maelstrom. Over time, two additional sides of the monument have been expanded to include the dates of the visits of the following kings:
Haakon VII visited the site on July 5, 1926, and
Olav V visited Saltstraumen on August 14, 1982.
The fourth side of the monument has remained open until now (2017).

Glacial Pothole

Highlight • Natural Monument

Glacial potholes are formed by meltwater flowing through crevasses and, in particular, moulins toward the glacier bed. This meltwater coalesces into streams and, in certain places, forms eddies. These eddies have flow speeds of up to 200 km/h and high pressure. The main erosion work, hollowing out the bedrock, is performed by the sand and gravel particles carried along with it.

It is an interesting natural spectacle to see how the tides force their way through the narrow opening between the open sea and the fjord, creating powerful whirlpools. The current reverses every 6 hours. There are numerous information boards throughout the area where you can find out a lot about the area.

My trip to Norway with children continues..... long since back home, I'm only gradually getting around to looking through all the pictures, processing the impressions again and uploading the little tours here.

Unfortunately, we had mostly bad weather and so we drove further north from the sandy beach - through pouring rain to Saltstraumen. We parked at the campsite there …
