The 110 km stretch between Lodbjerg and Nymindegab is a retreating coast for almost the entire stretch. This means that if coastal protection is not carried out, the coast will retreat. The greatest retreat is seen from Fjaltring to the middle of Ndr. Thorsminde Tange. Here the shoreline would shift backwards by 6-8 m depending on the years without kiss protection. On the other part of the route, 1-4 m of coast is disappearing per year.

The weather determines how much the sea takes away from the coast. Waves are created by the wind blowing across the sea surface.

On the west coast, the waves run diagonally towards the coast and form a current running parallel to the coast between the outer reef and the shoreline. This longitudinal current carries the sand with it and causes an average sand loss of around 4 million m3 of sand per year on the west coast.

Beach and dune change when waves and water level reach a certain level, such as in stormy weather. The onshore wind and air pressure cause high water levels on the beach, giving the waves a chance to roll right up to the dune.

Groynes at Ferring Sø

Highlight • Structure

After the last ice age, the sea was 75 km further west and much deeper. After that, both sea and land rose, and the sea gnawed at the shore.

The coast has been protected by groynes since 1875. The groyne blocks were cast on site, but the materials were transported here in a small dump truck train. Today, the sleepers and rails have been removed and a cycle path has been laid out along much of the route.

practical information

The hiking route around the lake Ferring Sø is about 9 km long. A small part of the route leads through an animal enclosure. Don't startle the animals, if left alone they will do nothing.

If it has rained a lot, the water level in the lake can be high. It is therefore sometimes advisable to wear waterproof shoes. Unfortunately, the water of Lake Ferring Sø is not clean enough to bathe in.

Southern Briar Shipwreck

Highlight • Monument

The whaling ships Southern Briar and Southern Lotus ran aground and sank on December 18, 1966.

Just south of breakwater 12 lie the remains of the whaling ship "Southern Briar". The bottom of the ship with a large steam boiler and part of the ship's walls are still standing on the seabed near the shore.

In 1967 2 whalers were towed from Norway to Germany to be scrapped. Because of the bad weather, the tow ropes snapped and the two whalers drifted ashore. The "Southern Lotus" ran aground at Dybå and the "Southern Briar" at the isthmus between Ferring Sø and the North Sea.

The Southern Lotus was scrapped on the beach. As the "Southern Briar" lay further out in the water, only the upper parts could be removed. The rest is still standing as shown in the picture. However, over the years it has sunk below the surface of the water and is only visible at extremely low tide.

The propeller and harpoon of one of these whalers are kept at Thorsminde Stranding Museum.

Wreck of the Steamship Ludwig

Highlight • Monument

The steamer "Ludwig" ran aground and sank on January 31, 1906.

At this point lies the wreck of the German steamer "Ludwig", which ran aground here on the voyage from Shields to Setting with coal on January 31, 1906.

The crew of 14 men and a stewardess were rescued from the waterlogged ship in difficult weather conditions. Shortly thereafter, the ship sank in the sand, where it was completely destroyed.

During the accident, the wreck stands parallel to the coast on the sand reef. The iron on both stems and in the center of the nose of the machine, along with the two large steam boilers, are visible.

One day, when the coast and sand reefs recede, the wreck will emerge and there will be far more to see.
