Rifle Butts Alley

Highlight (Segment) • Historical Site

"In 1859 an invasion by the French, under the Second Empire of Napoleon III, was widely feared. Volunteer movements of riflemen sprang up all over the country, and Epsom hosted the 8th Corps of the Surrey Rifle Volunteers. They trained in Rifle Butts Alley, beside a long valley leading up to the Downs, and relaxed afterwards at a pub in East Street, still called the Rifleman. In 1881 the volunteers became a territorial detachment of the regular East Surrey Regiment." (eehe.org.uk/?p=33248)

The area was used in the late C19 for shooting practice, but the range was abandoned when Grand Stand Road was laid out across the downs above. Rifle Butts Alley is a pleasant walk up to the downs away from the traffic. On Derby Day each year, it is greatly used as a means of access to the races by local people. Box Hill Café

Highlight • Rest Area

The cafe at the top of Box Hill is a great place to start a run or plan a stop. Buying a drink here helps support conservation and maintenance of the area, including the trails. The cafe serves a good selection of hot and cold food, drinks, cake and ice-creams. It gets busy but there's plenty of seating inside and out.
Open 10am to 4pm every day.

View from Box Hill

Highlight • Viewpoint

Box Hill is one of the most famous hills in Surrey, if not the UK. Named after the ancient box woodland on its slopes, the hill is blanketed in green and enjoys panoramic viewpoints over the surrounding countryside and Dorking.

Box Hill has become more and more popular with cyclists after it featured in the 2012 Olympics cycling road race events. Around 850,000 people now visit the hill each year. Managed by the National Trust, you can follow in the pedal strokes of Olympians and ride the Box Hill circuit that climbs up to 390 feet (120 meters), although the hill's highest point is 735 feet (224 meters) at Betchworth Clumps.
