Driffield Canal

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Driffield Navigation is an 11-mile waterway, through the heart of the Holderness Plain to the market town of Driffield, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The northern section of it is a canal, and the southern section is part of the River Hull. Construction was authorised in 1767, and it was fully open in 1770.

Driffield Navigation Canal

Highlight • River

An 11 mile (18 km) canal, the Driffield Navigation was opened in 1770 to transport goods across the North of England. However, the last commercial trip on the river was made in 1951. Many of the locks and bridges fell into disrepair following its commercial decline. However, today the canal is a pretty waterway that has been restored to its former glory.

Black Mill, Beverley Westwood

Highlight • Historical Site

Beverley Westwood Pasture, to give it its full name, is an open area to the east of the town of Beverley.

Cattle and sheep graze here so you may see a few wandering across the road. There is a race course and a golf course on the Westwood, plus a ruined windmill, known locally as Black Mill, which dates from 1803.

View of the Fields

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Here you pass picturesque fields. It is especially nice when the oilseed rape flowers yellow or the wheat and barley fields extend like soft, green carpets left and right of the way.

The roads around Southburn, Hutton Cranswick and Skerne are wonderfully flat and have an air of Belgium about them.

These roads are also on the Way of the Roses. The flat reward for all the hills before now.

Stove Café-Bistro

Highlight • Cafe

Part of Cranswick Garden Centre is a really nice cafe that does a good selection of coffees and cakes. They have some bike parking available (some undercover too).

Duck Pond

Highlight • Viewpoint

Beautiful local village pond - thriving with life with moor hens and ducks. Great place to stop and feed the birds or sit with a sandwich on the benches.
