Coin Wishing Tree

Highlight • Structure

In various places in England you can find stumps or fallen trees in which coins have been minted.

It is said to be a custom that originated in Scotland in the 18th century. The belief arose that a person suffering from a disease could put a coin in a tree and the tree would take away the disease. If someone then takes the coin out, it is said that that person will become ill.

On a walk in Cumbria I once read a different explanation:
A man, walking with his grandchild, would have struck a coin in a tree as a landmark: the coin would remind the child of that day with his grandfather.
When the grandchild returned to the site as an adult many years later, after the death of his grandfather, the tree was full of coins...

Si non è vero è am trovato.

Falling Foss

Highlight • Cave

Falling Foss is a beautiful waterfall situated in picturesque woodland. There is an intriguing hermit cave nearby, and tearooms, as well as lots of lovely walking to enjoy in the area.

May Beck Picnic Area

Highlight • Trail

May Beck is a popular, albeit small, picnic spot. With its open setting, there's often sheep grazing nearby and the stony May Beck stream flowing alongside you.

Paths from here lead to Falling Foss, a stunning 30-foot (9 m) tall waterfall, one of the Moors' absolute top natural gems. Which is only a very short distance away.

Falling Foss Tea Garden

Highlight • Cafe

The tea garden is open seasonally from April to September. During this time, it's open every day from 10:00 - 16:00 unless the weather is horrible, you can phone 07723 477929 to check.
They serve hot and cold drinks, homemade cakes and scones, a daily homemade soup and savoury pasties.

An amazing circular room cut into a huge block of grit stone. Inside, the single room is a seat cut around the edge. It's said that this was made in the 18th century and was the home of a hermit. It's likely that it was created by a local landowner commissioning a folly.

Highlight • Forest

What a heavenly beautiful forest this is!!!
(Note: it can be quite busy at the waterfall, Falling Foss; this place appears to be very popular with families with children)
