Sand Hutton Village

Highlight • Historical Site

Sand Hutton is a small village dating back to the Domesday Book. Hutton comes from the words for hill and settlement so despite the flatlands around here there is a little climb to get up here.

There is a 19th century church, St Mary's, down a lovely tree-lined avenue and the ruins of St Leonard's, the previous 12th century place of worship lie in its grounds.

Kirkham Priory

Highlight • Monument

Kirkham Priory is an Augustinian Abbey, built in the 12th century. If you look carefully at the gothic medieval gatehouse you can see sculptures of St George and the dragon on the left and David and Goliath to the right.

The Priory is on the banks of the river Derwent and the area was used as a test centre for WW2 landing vehicles for the D-Day landings. Soldiers even scaled the heights of the cloister walls with scrambling nets to practice moving from large ships to smaller boats. Even Sir Winston Churchill and King George VI came to visit with the troops were stationed here.

Kirkham Priory

Highlight • Historical Site

Nice spot for a quick break. Be careful descending the steepish hill from Crambe/Whitwell, there's a level crossing immediately round the bend at the bottom.

Leavening Brow Climb

Highlight • Climb

The climb to Leavening Brow starts just shy of 2km to the north of Birdsall. It starts more gradually and then ramps up once you have gone through Birdsall to the crossroads at the woods (The Aldro Plantation).

Turn right at the crossroads and make sure you stop to admire the view. On a good day you can see the Howardian Hills, the North York Moors and even the Pennines.

Hold tight, smooth road surface and sweeping turns on a wide road make for a cracking descent. Keep wits about you for tractors heading up!

Water Dale

Highlight • Viewpoint

Water Dale is a beautiful place to ride in either direction. Downhill towards Thixendale or up towards Leavening.

The road winds along right at the base of the deep sided vale so you really get a feel of the Yorkshire Wolds at its best. Highland Cattle are often grazed here which make a lovely additional sight.
