Askrigg village

Highlight • Religious Site

Askrigg is a beautiful little historic village and a real treat to hike through, as it has one long main street that's lined with houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Very quaint, with two pubs, tea rooms, a bakery and a little shop, as well as few B&Bs.

Oxnop Scar Climb (25% Gradient)

Highlight • Viewpoint

After the first 200m, you get a respite & a decision to make. Carry straight on up Moor Road to Oxnop Scar & Muker. This is a tough climb.

Alternatively take the right up a ramp. The top of this little section has a spectacular view of Wensleydale. If you want a photo, now is a good time, since the toughest section is just around the corner...

Shortly after there is a fork in the road. Go left. It is steeper than anything so far and drags on a bit. Once conquered, there are a series of tough ramps, but increasingly less severe. Eventually the top arrives.

About 200m after the summit, the road bears left. The view here is incredible, Swaledale, rocks, sheep & the thread of tarmac disappearing sinuously.

The descent is technical and gets twisty & narrow near the bottom. Take care! Oncoming vehicles are rare, but will occupy 90% of the road if they appear.

Yes, I live here.

Low Straights Lane

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Low Straights Lane is a green and beautiful walk between Whitfield Gill (west) and Moor Road (east) with absolutely incredible views of Wensleydale pretty much all the way. Idyllic, calming and soothing: if you're here, you are having a good day.

St Oswald's Church, Askrigg

Highlight • Religious Site

A superb church sits right in the heart of Askrigg. It's Grade-I listed (in other words: top-notch), dating back to the 15th century and in the Perpendicular style. As many churches with long history, it was rebuilt in the past: in the case of this one, in the 19th century. Make sure you go inside to have a look: it is one of those churches with a very special sacred feeling to it.
