Bergen Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

Bergen's town hall was originally built in 1910/11 as an agricultural winter school – one of the first institutions of its kind in the region. A relief depicting a plow and quill on the facade still commemorates its former use. As part of the administrative reform, the building was converted into a town hall in 1972 and has served exclusively as the city administration ever since. The administrative complex is complemented by the neighboring registry office, a listed half-timbered building dating from 1819, which the city acquired in 1986 and restored in 1997.

The historical development of the town hall and its outbuildings reflects Bergen's transformation from an agriculturally dominated community to a modern city administration.

My personal interpretation: The color of the work is based on the cattle wagons in which the concentration camp inmates were transported for days. The abstractly portrayed people push out of this with their last strength if they can still do it after the exertions. Although there is a certain urge for freedom, there is nothing happy about the scene. It's about bare survival.

At least 52,000 prisoners died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp before it was liberated by British troops in 1945 - including the now world-famous Jewish girl Anne Frank. The documentation center shows photos and other evidence of the horror in an impressive and moving permanent exhibition - in modern and yet appropriately restrained architecture. In the adjacent outdoor area there are mass graves, memorials and a gravestone in memory of Anne Frank and her sister Margot.

Dear cyclists, please take your time for the visit. Let us, who did not have to experience the horror, pause to remember the victims.

Museum Farm Winsen (Aller)

Highlight • Historical Site

Around a two-tiered hall house from 1653 are grouped historic half-timbered buildings, as they were typical of the southern Lüneburg Heath: barns, stables and staircase storage. They show the peasant life and economies in earlier centuries. A bakery reconstructed from old materials delivers bread, fresh airs and butter cake twice a year.

In the former coach house, the museum shop and the cash register are housed, the spinning and weaving circle meets here to work together, and in front of the entrance is the small garden with dye plants.

In a building also constructed of old materials as a staircase storage, the working group "Flößer" shows which important sideline for the local population was the transport of tree trunks down the Aller to Bremen. In addition, the Museum Collection is supervised by the Working Group on Collection and Archive.

In 1795 "Dat groode Hus" was built, where special exhibitions, concerts and numerous cultural events take place. It is used by the municipality Winsen for Council meetings and serves with its atmospheric framework as a branch office of the registry office.

The Kalandstube in 1781 houses the Kalandstube, a café and restaurant serving regional specialties. On the extensive grounds with the draw wells and the apiary old apple trees are cultivated, and a herb garden completes the plant.

Wolthausen Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

The small tower is always open and easy to find. He looks very well maintained and is also free to visit. You can't see that far from the top, but I think the view is beautiful. The route to the tower is very easy because the tower is not on a peak but in the city and it is flat.
