Be aware, this is a popular place and the car park is pretty big - but the access road is winding and single track, so it can take a while to get here.

Sugar Loaf Trail

Highlight • Trail

Sugar Loaf is an iconic little mountain and a Trail Magazine Top UK 100 mountain. The beauty of this hill is that you can come up from a variety of directions on quite a few trails. Take your pick really!

Given the conical and conspicuous form of Mynydd Pen-y-fâl (Sugar Loaf), it should come as no surprise that the final climb to the summit is steep. Many can expect a bit of hike-a-bike here. The views from the top are excellent, with the main Black Mountains massif dominating matters to the north.

Sugar Loaf Summit

Highlight • Summit

Mynydd Pen-y-fâl, to give Sugar Loaf its original Welsh name, is not a big hill. But because it stands separated from any other peak, including its brethren of the Black Mountains, it rises in wonderful isolation above the rolling landscape of Monmouthshire. To see it is to want to stand on its conical summit.

Mynydd Llanwenarth Ridge

Highlight • Climb

The broad Mynydd Llanwenarth ridge is home to one of the several trails that rise to the iconic summit of Mynydd Pen-y-fâl, more commonly known as Sugar Loaf. It's a relatively steep climb onto the escarpment but then the gradients ease until the final climb to the main peak. As well as Llanwenarth, there are four other main ridges that radiate from Sugar Loaf's central mass, making it a hill that rewards with detailed exploration.
