Pentewan Quay

Highlight • Settlement

Pentewan harbour is entirely cut off from the sea after the clay export industry here dried up in favour of nearby Charlestown and Par. It was also used for pilchard fishing which is now similarly inactive.

There is a post office and shops plus a large caravan park where holiday makers can make the most of the wide sand on Pentewan beach.

Riverside Valley Trail

Highlight • Cycleway

Nice flat multi-use track. Tarmac for the 1st half then hard parked gravel for the rest. Suitable for road bikes, at least I ride it with my 28mm tyres without any issues.

Charlestown Harbour

Highlight • Historical Site

Charlestown is an unspoilt Georgian harbour used frequently as a filming location as it is so unchanged by time. It features in Poldark, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Eagle has Landed, Alice in Wonderland and the Three Musketeers to name a few.

The harbour was built between 1791 and 1801 to export copper and import coal but also ended up exporting china clay. Charlestown was named after Charles Rashleigh, a local entrepreneur who invested greatly in the area. It was previously known as West Polmear.

There is a cafe and two pubs in Charlestown plus a Shipwreck Treasure Museum.

Par Beach Nature Reserve Lake

Highlight • Natural Monument

Just behind Par beach is a small wetland. A few chalets from Par Sands Holiday Park look out across the lake which must make for a beautiful view at sunrise & sunset.

In years gone past it was a model boating lake but now a tranquil nature reserve.

Par Sands Beach

Highlight • Beach

Par Sands is a wide sandy expanse of beach with a network of sand dunes behind.

The beach is flanked by Cornwall's famous exports. Looking towards the beach and east is a rural idyll whereas looking west is a china clayworks, still in use today.

Pentewan Railway Trail

Highlight • Trail

Between London Apprentice and Pentewan runs the disused Pentewan Railway Line. It is now a flat traffic free trail of around 4.5km in one direction so makes the perfect place to run at a consistent pace.

It also makes a great way to link St Austell with the coast path for a longer run. As it is so flat it is either a great warm up or warm down after a hilly coast run.
