Kennet and Avon Canal Towpath — Dundas Aqueduct to Avoncliff

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Very beautiful section of the GB National Cycle Route 4 along the old canal that was used to transport coal to London. Very well developed on the old towpath. The highlight is the aqueduct at Dundas Wharf. Then of course on to Bath.

Monkton Combe village

Highlight • Religious Site

Monkton Combe is a beautiful and charming village just south of Bath. It has a stunning Norman Church, St Michael’s Church, the obligatory public house, and an old-fashioned ‘village lockup,’ where they used to detain the less sober of the village inhabitants. What is most interesting is that the churchyard contains the grave of Harry Patch, the last surviving British soldier who fought in the First World War. It is well worth having a brief stop here.

Two Tunnels Greenway

Highlight • Structure

Fantastic bike path going through the famous two tunnels. The longest bike path tunnel in the UK. Although it is lit the lighting is poor so lights are highly recommended to avoid collisions. Great spot for some on ride karaoke if you love the sound of your own voice (echos).

The Two Tunnels Greenway

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

A fine shortcut runs through two (former railroad) tunnels. Lights front and rear are a good thing to have.

Bristol and Bath Railway Path

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The perfect route to go traffic-free from Bath to Bristol. It follows the route of the former Midland Railway, which was established in the mid-19th century to connect the two cities.

Arm Breaker Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

Quite tricky, but get in your lowest gear, stay seated, concentrate on the line and just keep powering through the initial few hundred metres... it relents after a while in terms of terrain and steepness... though the whole climb is very long. There's also a short, but steep road section to get up before the beginning and a grassy kicker at the end. A really good and satisfying challenge all round.

Dundas Aqueduct

Highlight • Bridge

Dundas Aqueduct carries the Kennet & Avon canal over the river Avon and the railway. It was opened in 1805 and designed by famous architect John Rennie.
The tow path between Bradford on Avon and Bath runs along the south side. To the north you can also cross the aqueduct to access the trails up through the woods to Conkwell or north along the river.
There is often a boat that sells ice cream and cold drinks, or you can leave the canal and follow the signed trail to the Angel Fish cafe where there are toilets.
You can often fill water from the boaters tap by the building and crane at the far side of the marina.
