Seaton Sluice Harbour

Highlight • Structure

The small harbor of the dreamy coastal town of Seaton Sluice has its own charm. On the calm waters of Seaton Burn are countless colorful boats waiting to be navigated to the sea. Cozy benches surrounded by green meadows line the small harbor basin and invite you to take a break, where you can relax wonderfully.

If you are hungry, you will find various cafés and pubs in the immediate vicinity of the harbor.

St Mary's Lighthouse and Island

Highlight • Monument

Reached between the tides via a short causeway, St. Mary's has all the fascination of a miniature, part-time island.

The Lighthouse, completed in 1898 on a hazardous coast for shipping, remained operational until 1984 when it was superseded by modern navigational techniques. Since then the Lighthouse and former keepers' cottages have been operated as a visitor centre by North Tyneside Council.

The surrounding Nature Reserve contains an area of rockpools, clifftop grassland, a beach and newly created wetland habitats.

This area is a vital haven for coastal birdlife, with St Mary’s particularly popular among wintering waders. Birds commonly spotted here include Curlew, Dunlin, Knot, Oystercatcher, Purple Sandpiper, Redshank, Golden Plover, Ringed Plover, and Sanderling. In some years, Bar-tailed Godwits also make an appearance.

St Mary's Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

Set amongst a beautiful nature reserve with rock pools, grasslands, cliffs, beaches and wetlands, St Mary's Lighthouse towers over the surrounding scenery. It's well-worth climbing the 137 steps to see the view at the top.

The lighthouse protected boats from its construction in 1898 until 1984. Today, you can visit the lighthouse for £3.30 per adult. As the lighthouse is situated on an island, the opening hours depend on the tide. You can find more information, here: my.northtyneside.gov.uk/category/635/st-marys-lighthouse
