Tiedexer Gate

Highlight • Monument

The Tiedexer Tor was one of five city gates, which secured the main roads of the city as early as 1300 with the completion of the approx. 2200m long city wall. These were representative entrances, which symbolized the urban self-confidence and freedom. Here access to the city was controlled and taxes, duties and charges were collected. The gate was named after the nearby village of Ti (e) dexen in the west of the city, which had fallen into desolation as early as the 14th century due to city migration. From the military fortifications of the Tiedex Gate, the remains of a gun emplacement (upper cat) are still preserved. The main gate was demolished during the Napoleonic occupation in 1813. The southern gatehouse was preserved and was used as a residential building. A breakthrough was made through its ground floor in 1964, through which the footpath to Tiedexer Straße was laid. When entering the city center, the visitor has a wonderful view of the historic streets of Tiedexer Strasse.

The Eulenspiegel fountain dates from 1942 and is optically dominant in the middle of the market square in front of the market church, flanked by the town hall, bread house and Ratsapotheke. It is named after Till Eulenspiegel, a previous guest.

It is historically rather doubtful whether Eulenspiegel actually stayed in Einbeck. According to legend, he is said to have apprenticed to brewery and received the order there to throw hops into the brewing kettle. But instead of the hops, he allegedly threw the master brewer's dog named "Hopf" into the kettle.

Historic Old Town, Einbeck

Highlight • Historical Site

In 1614 a master brewer, probably named Elias Pichler, was lured away by Einbeck to the Hofbräuhaus, who from then on brewed his Ainpöckisch beer in Munich. In the Bavarian dialect, it became the "Oanpock" and over time the name Bock beer. Einbecker beer is the origin of all bock beers.

Eickesche House, Einbeck

Highlight • Historical Site

The Eickesche Haus in Einbeck's pedestrian zone is a late Renaissance half-timbered house richly decorated with figurative carvings. Today it houses the city tourist information and the cultural ring. (...) The facades of the Eickesches Haus are decorated with rich carvings, which make up the cultural significance of the building. The motifs come from the educational world of humanism, the Reformation and the Renaissance and antiquity. The thresholds of the protruding upper floors, the 51 consoles and the filler wood are decorated with ornamental carvings. The numerous figurative representations on the 42 existing parapet panels show Christ, the four evangelists, the five senses, the planetary deities, the seven liberal arts as well as the virtues (e.g. faith, love, patience or prudence) and the muses (such as Erato, Euterpe, Calliope or Polyhymnia). The eleven apostles, seven warriors and 25 hermen pilasters are depicted in the posts of the window areas above the parapets. There are also 110 carved heads and masks. On the front corner beam, three warrior figures stand on top of each other as atlases, each apparently supporting the floors above them. The Middle Low German inscriptions in the corner area between the cleats on the first floor come from the Proverbs of Solomon and from the 37th Psalm.

April 21, 2025,Einbeck, schöne Fachwerkkulisse ⛪️ und Bockbier 🍻
After the bike tour, we took a walk along the beautiful half-timbered scenery and enjoyed a Bock beer in the wonderful Brodhaus.

Magnificent old town, entire streets with old half-timbered houses, ring wall system, PS storage and somewhere in a rustic pub a Einbecker Winterbock beer.
Then there is the story of the man who was forgotten at the city wall for 10 years.

Today a virtual Komoot friendship was once again brought into reality. I've been following @Wolle Teicke on Komoot for quite some time. With his tour “ECKEN …” komoot.com/de-de/tour/1406796650 interest in Einbeck was aroused. I couldn't refuse Wolle's invitation under any circumstances; it would have been fatal, as today's result has shown.

There used to be more lametta? No, there used to be more music. At least at the Christmas markets. Eerie silence that doesn't belong here. A mood killer. So we don't stay long and prefer to continue our walk through the city.

Today I was invited to a plant bazaar in Einbeck...but you can always check out Komoot to see what else you can do there. A short walk...but nice.

Komoot annoyed me this morning. The tour wouldn't go offline. Luckily, I had another phone with me and just let it record. Shortly before it reached the PS storage, I saw that it was indeed being recorded. So, one planned tour suddenly became two tours.
