Ascent to Castello San Salvatore (Susegana)

Highlight (Segment) • Castle

The castle of San Salvatore is an ancient fortified complex in Susegana, in the province of Treviso. The castle has a rather late origin: in 1245 the hill of San Salvatore was ceded by the municipality of Treviso to the counts of Collalto, who already boasted feudal rights over the neighboring county of the same name. Construction began between the late thirteenth century, fourteenth century and early fifteenth century. In 1312, when the castle was now completed, the Collaltos obtained from Henry VII full jurisdiction over the counties of Collalto and San Salvatore: it was the beginning of a principality which, although within the municipality of Treviso first and the Serenissima then, maintained very large autonomy until 1797, with the arrival of Napoleon.

Excellent red wines are also produced in these areas. Not far from here is the headquarters of the Collalto winery.

Colle della Tombola

Highlight • Summit

With its 250 m.s.l.m. Colle della Tombola was an excellent observatory for the Austro-Hungarian troops during the First World War. The toponym Colle della Tombola derives from "tumba" that is a protrusion of land, a rise of earth. The lost castle of the Counts of Collefusco (Colfosco) was built on the hill in the Middle Ages.

An avenue of cypresses marks the road that leads to the top of the hill by climbing a somewhat battered flight of steps. On the top an imposing horse chestnut tree surrounded by oaks, locust trees and hornbeams.

Collalto Castle

Highlight • Castle

Built in the 12th century by the Collalto family, this castle was used for a long time as a military fortress. Especially during the First World War it was heavily damaged and now remains just beyond the tower and walls.
