Panorama near Mont de Carsène

Highlight • Viewpoint

This trail is dotted with splendid panoramic views and the terrain does not present any particular technical difficulties. It's a pleasure to run here as you can often look up and admire the surrounding views.

In this area it is possible to observe many sinkholes, which are depressions in the ground, typical of a karst landscape and often associated with underground caves.

Porta Sestrera

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Porta Sestrera, located at an altitude of 2,228 meters, is a pass also known as the Lapassè pass, which connects the Ellero valley with the Pesio valley. The name "sestrera" comes from the Provençal term "sistre", which refers to a specific type of clayey, flaky rock. Before the construction of the modern roads connecting southern Piedmont and western Liguria, Porta Sestrera was one of the main communication routes between the Cuneo region and the Ligurian Riviera.

In April 1944, this area was the scene of the Easter battle between Nazi-fascist troops and Italian partisans. After intense fighting around Pian delle Gorre, the partisans retreated towards Porta Sestrera and from there dispersed, moving towards Carnino and the head of Val Tanaro.

Saline Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Passo delle Saline is an Alpine pass located at over 2,100 meters of altitude, offering magnificent panoramic views. During the ascent to the Saline summit, on the border between the Ellero valley and the Tanaro valley, the trail follows a striking ridge walk.

As its name suggests, in the past the Passo delle Saline played a significant role as part of the "Via del Sale" (Salt Road), a route used to transport precious salt from Liguria to the lower Piedmont. This ancient trade route follows a Roman road built in the 1st century BC, which connected Alba to Albenga.
