Hessedrescher Bronze Sculptures at the Historic Town Hall Groß-Gerau

Highlight • Monument

In front of the historic town hall of Groß-Gerau are the bronze Hessian threshers, the largest group of figures in the district town. The "Hesse threshers" in front of the historic town hall of Groß-Gerau are the largest of the seven groups of figures in the district town. A little mouse is nibbling on the cheese, which it apparently stole from the farm workers' basket filled with wine, sausage, bread and cheese, two other rodents sit as still as a mouse: the bronze group of figures of the "Hesse thresher" next to the historic town hall from 1579 is worth a closer look , because there are many details to be discovered. Today, the three bronze field workers with the flails as well as a farmer's wife or maid and a girl with a dangling doll standing to the side have long been part of the cityscape. Does the woman with a sheaf of grain under her arm symbolize the reaper-binders who helped to bundle the sheaves of grain in the days before mechanization took hold in agriculture?

This cycle path is a dream and much better than the alternative of the parallel federal road.

Rabenspitze Pumping Station at the Winter Dike – Astheim/Trebur 🚴‍♂️
After wet conditions in the marshland in 1920 and 1922, the arable land could no longer be adequately cultivated. There was a real food shortage, which went down in history as the "Famine Years." The then farmer and state parliament member of the Weilerhof in Wolfskehlen campaigned for optimal improvement of the water conditions in the marshland. At the time of its founding on June 11, 1923, the municipalities of Astheim, Berkach, Dornheim, Erfelden, Geinsheim, Leeheim, Trebur, and Wallerstädten belonged to the association. After the construction of the Hessenaue, the smallest municipality in the district was also incorporated into the association. The Schwarzbach stream is to be relieved 🚴‍♂️
Today, the wastewater association maintains 30 kilometers of main ditches, 30 kilometers of inlet ditches, and around 300 kilometers of smaller drainage ditches, most of which were constructed by hand between 1925 and 1927. Modern excavators and construction machinery did not yet exist at the time. All participating municipalities and the affected property owners contributed to the financing. The Kammerhof, Wächterstadt, and Rabenspitze pumping stations were built. The facilities began operation on January 1, 1928. 🚴‍♂️

Günter Engel, a long-time Trebur firefighter and flood control expert, was also able to clarify the term "Rabenspitze." The association's area, which covers approximately 5,000 hectares, resembles the shape of a raven, with the old pumping station built at the tip of its beak.
However, this pumping station had to be shut down as soon as the summer dams were flooded, and thus could no longer drain the northern district of the association. As part of the dike rehabilitation in 2011, the new pumping station was installed in the winter dam at a cost of around €3.8 million.

Thanks to a newly constructed feeder channel from the Schwarzbach, the new pumping station also serves to relieve the Schwarzbach in the event of flooding. 🚴‍♂️

Here, you can compete with the racing cyclists for many kilometers on the best asphalt ;-). Riding away from the road in what is admittedly a rather desolate landscape has something almost meditative about it.
