Ralswiek Castle and Marina

Highlight • Castle

The community Ralswiek is located in the center of the island of Rügen on Jasmunder Bodden. Approximately 400 inhabitants live in the small town and its districts Jarnitz, Gnies and Augustenhof. What makes Ralswiek popular with tourists and residents alike is its stunning location in an original landscape of wooded hills, fields and meadows. To the northeast opens a view of the impressive Bodden landscape. Ralswiek with its districts has a thousand-year history. Authentic the chronicle of the community that Ralswiek was first mentioned in documents in 1020. Archaeological excavations and research see Ralswiek as a significant finding. Among the most valuable and well-known finds are the Arabian silver treasure and the quite well preserved shipwrecks in Slavic style. It is not without reason that Ralswiek is therefore dubbed the legendary Vineta Rügen.

Many visitors flock to the annual event of the Störtebeker Festival in the city.

Wooden Chapel Ralswiek

Highlight • Religious Site

The wooden chapel Ralswiek is a small Protestant church building in Ralswiek on Rügen. It is one of the churches of the Protestant parish of Schaprode, which belongs to the Stralsund provostry of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church District.
The small church is built entirely of wood in a style common in Sweden and represents an architectural peculiarity for Rügen.
At the end of the 19th century, Hugo Sholto Graf von Douglas from Aschersleben acquired the Ralswiek estate and extensively rebuilt it. After the construction of several houses, a school, and the village streets, there was an intention to also build a church in Ralswiek. At an exhibition in Stockholm, the Count saw the wooden chapel exhibited there as a model church. Douglas acquired the church in 1907, had it dismantled and transported across the Baltic Sea to Ralswiek. Here it was rebuilt at its current location and consecrated in 1907.
Above the entrance to the church, the motto "Die Liebe höret nimmer auf" (Love never ceases) can be read.
Today, the chapel is also used for organ concerts.
Next to the chapel, until 2007, stood the sacristan's house, about 200 years old, built in half-timbered and clay construction, belonging to the chapel. In that year, the building, locally known for its rustic appearance as the "witch house", fell victim to arson.
