Tour de Grimaud

Highlight • Other

Grimaud Castle (Château de Grimaud in French) is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle in France. It rises on a hill slightly dominating the town of Grimaud in the Var department.
The castle, already mentioned in the 11th century, was the seat of the Lord of Freinet, who was a vassal of the Count of Provence. In the Middle Ages and early modern times, the castle was lent to various noble families, who modified and expanded it. Defeated in the Huguenot Wars, it was destroyed in the 17th and 18th centuries. Century transformed into a castle-like complex. After being confiscated during the French Revolution and then used as a quarry, the castle gradually fell into ruin. Today its remains have been secured and are open to visitors free of charge all year round.

Saint-Roch Mill

Highlight • Historical Site

The mill Saint-Roche has been in this place since the 16th century. It was one of 4 windmills in the village, used by 9 watermills for grain processing. In front of the mill is the round threshing floor, on which horse hooves separated the "wheat from the chaff". Sometimes, in addition, a still visible stone roll was used to increase the effect.

The operation of the mill was stopped at the beginning of the 20th century. Around 1990, the roof, as well as the wings and the grinder were restored:

Grimaud Village

Highlight • Settlement

Dominated by the ruins of its 11th-century castle, the hilltop town dominates the bay of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, which was called the Gulf of Athenopolis during the French Revolution and later the Gulf of Grimaud. The mostly medieval-looking town lies between the main road D 588 and the castle complex, at the foot of the heavily wooded Maures massif, which extends eastwards from Hyères and Pierrefeu-du-Var to Fréjus.

Saint-Michel Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The Saint-Michel church Listed as a Historical Monument. It was built between the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries and was completed in the sixteenth century with a square bell tower.

A special feature of the church is the entrance. From the sun-drenched church square, you descend a staircase into the dark medieval atmosphere of the church. The little light is generated by few windows and indirect lighting. In earlier times it must have been a lot darker.

Cogolin Old Town

Highlight • Settlement

The name of the locality is attested in the form Cucullinus in 1055 in the cartulary of the abbey of Saint-Victor de Marseille, Cugullino in 1079, Cogolino around 1200.
Cogolin is a promontory jutting out onto a plain; It is this type of hill, which in Provençal we call "cuquihon - couquihoun", which gave its name to Cougoulin-Cogolin. Probably from the Occitan coucouri, coucouli, gouguli “pine cone” to designate a height.

Historic Center of Cogolin

Highlight • Historical Site

Lordship of the Viscounts of Marseille, then of the Cuers family. By inheritance, it enters the Chabert family, a Provençal noble house. The seigniory was raised to the marquisate by Louis XV for Joseph Bernard de Chabert. In 1579, the town was sacked by the soldiers of the Comte de Carcès.
Landing of the 3rd US Infantry Division
Cogolin was liberated on August 15, 1944 at the time of the landing in Provence by the 3rd American infantry division coming by road from Cavalaire.
But the most memorable event is undoubtedly the landing of the prestigious 3rd Algerian infantry division (3rd DIA) of General de Monsabert on the beach of La Foux on August 16, 1944, which marks the return of the French army from Africa in the metropolis. De Monsabert (3rd DIA) and De Lattre (Army B) set up their headquarters in Cogolin.

Scenic Road Near Grimaud

Highlight • Trail

Due to its elevated position, facing the pass that crosses the Massif des Maures at La Garde-Freinet, Grimaud played an important role in the line of the Early warning system of the regional villages perchés (places at high altitude, here: Ramatuelle, Gassin, Grimaud, La Garde-Freinet with its so-called Saracen Fort, Le Vieux-Cannet near Le Luc). Due to its position, the site was of strategic importance in defending against raids and incursions of any kind (e.g. pirates, etc.).
