Rüsselsheim Fortress

Highlight • Castle

The Rüsselsheim Fortress and the surrounding area are worth a visit. To get a good overview, it is worth walking around the fortress three times. First via the street An der Festung above the moat, then inside the moat and finally via the ramparts inside the fortress. The Wallanlage is open Tuesday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The ramparts offer a good view of the surrounding area. In the inner courtyard of the fortress there are historical buildings, a museum on the industrial history of Rüsselsheim, a cafe and the local history association.

Mönchbruch Hunting Lodge

Highlight • Historical Site

The hunting lodge Mönchbruch was built by the landgrave Ernst-Ludwig von Hessen-Darmstadt around 1730 in the center of the Mönchbruch. It is located on the north side of today's B 486 in the middle between Mörfelden and the Rüsselsheim district of Haßloch.

Ernst-Ludwig was an enthusiastic hunter who introduced parforce hunting in Darmstadt in 1708. The Gießen master builder Colonel Helfrich Müller (1686–1759) drew the plans for the hunting lodge. In addition to six mansions, the entire ensemble included stables, coach houses and various outbuildings.

Beautiful bike path separated from the road. Can be driven well (also with a racing bike). In addition, not too much cycling and walking.

Opel Bridge/Main Bridge (1927/28) – Flörsheim 🚴‍

In earlier times, there was only a ferry connection from Flörsheim to Raunheim, so the old "Opel Bridge," inaugurated on August 26, 1928, created a road connection to the other side of the Main River, to Rüsselsheim. In 1945, the Wehrmacht blew the bridge in half to ward off the American invasion. The bridge was quickly repaired and served traffic until 1979 before being demolished. The current new and larger Main Bridge was then built a little further upstream with a four-lane roadway.
The current "Opel Bridge" over the Main River between Flörsheim and Rüsselsheim consists of two box-girder structures. The prestressed concrete bridge is designed for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists and is easily accessible for all groups. A convenient cycle and pedestrian path runs under the bridge span on both sides of the Main River.

Type: Concrete girder bridge
Total length: 401.40 m
Width: Unknown
Ship clearance: Unknown
Construction period: 1927–1928
Use: - Road bridge
- Single-sided public pedestrian and bicycle bridge
