Karlstein / Seligenstadt Main Ferry 🚴‍♂️

Today's Main Ferry is a free-floating car ferry that crosses the Main River. It has been in operation since 1971. Before it, there were two or three (the exact number is no longer known) ferries connecting the Hessian town of Seligenstadt with the Bavarian side of the Main River – the municipalities of Kahl and Karlstein am Main. The ferry is operated by the Seligenstadt municipal utilities and incurs significant losses every year, partly due to high administrative costs. Therefore, there have been frequent discussions about whether a bridge should be built over the Main River instead of the ferry. There is also talk of having the ferry operated by a private company to save costs. It is one of twelve ferries that still cross the Main River today.

A permanent connection across the Main River has existed since the ninth century, as the Seligenstadt monastery held the right to transport people and goods to the other side of the Main. This right was passed on in exchange for money or in kind, giving rise to the "ferry right." This "ferry right" usually remained in the possession of a family for many years and could be passed down through inheritance. When the monastery was dissolved in 1803, the ferry right passed to the Grand Duchy of Hesse, and the ferry operation was leased out.
In 1868, the city of Seligenstadt acquired all rights and privileges to travel on the Main River from the ferrymen of that time in exchange for money. The city leased the ferry right to the highest bidder. It was not until after the Second World War that the city took over the ferry again. Initially, a non-motorized ferryboat was purchased, which was not converted into a free-floating ferry until 1957.

Kleinostheim Lock

Highlight • Structure

On the one hand there is a lot of lock traffic and on the other hand a hydroelectric power station is running here. For technology fans a must! When floods, the locks are lowered and then the Main raging down the main edge.
