The church tower is adorned with a so-called "Welsche Haube" (Italian dome), visible from afar. As a "wayside church," it invites travelers to linger, a concept borrowed from Scandinavia, where wayside churches are called "Tiekirkko" (street churches). The three-aisled church was first documented in 1318, but this is likely a precursor building. The oldest part of St. Catherine is the choir, built around 1400.
