Evangelical Village Church Altjeßnitz

Highlight • Religious Site

Altjeßnitz Protestant village church
The small Romanesque stone church consists of a short nave, a retracted choir and a semicircular apse. The arched windows have still been preserved from the Romanesque period. On the western gable there is an octagonal wooden roof turret with a slate top.

The wall painting in the apse cap, which dates from the time the church was built, around 1200, is remarkable. There you can see Christ enthroned in the mandorla, with a second seated figure, probably Mary. In addition to the four evangelist symbols, John the Baptist and a bishop can be seen. The interior features a small late Gothic carved altar from the end of the 15th century, in the center of which the Madonna in a halo sits enthroned on the crescent moon.

Another special feature is the baptism, which probably dates back to the 17th century and was carried out using rustic carving. The church is located in the middle of the Altjeßnitz estate park, which also includes the famous baroque maze.
