Wildenburg Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

From up here you have a beautiful all-round view. The tower is always open. However, the operators would be very happy about a small donation at the bottom of the tower entrance.

Wildenburg Castle

Highlight • Castle

The Wildenburg castle tower rises majestically between bare branches – covered in a light layer of snow, yet still and sublime. The stone staircase leading up seems almost frozen in time. A place where history and nature merge to create a special atmosphere.

💡 Tip 🧗‍♂️
Even if you don't climb the tower, the view up to the castle complex alone is worth it. It's an atmospheric backdrop for your photos, especially in winter.

Hexentanzplatz on the Wildenburger Kopf

Highlight • Natural Monument

The east end of the summit plateau, dominated by quartzite rocks, was named "Hexentanzpplatz" in the Romantic era.
The plateau was part of a Celtic fortress.

A steep section with lots of rock underfoot – natural and a bit adventurous.
💡 Tip: Be careful when it's wet – good soles and steady footing are worth their weight in gold here.

View from the Mörschieder Burr

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Mörschieder Burr is a large Rosselheap that is crossed by the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig. On the "Ausblick Süd" there is a rest bench and a relaxation lounger as well as a small pulpit with a metal plaque that indicates the viewing directions.

Away from the signs for the rock path, if you follow the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig instead, you will reach a small viewing platform from which you have a great view to the southeast, e.g. of Herborn.
One side of the access path leads a few meters over loose rocks of the Rosselhalde Mörschieder Burr. You have to be careful here, as the Wacker wobbles and you slip quickly without sturdy shoes. Alternatively, go back to the rock path on the western approach.

Wildenburg Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

ATTENTION: Currently (January 2026), the tower is closed due to damage to the wooden structure. A reopening date is not yet foreseeable.

nlphh.de/blog/wildenburg-turm-vorerst-gesperrt-wegen-schaeden

The Wildenburg Castle ruins are situated at approximately 630 meters above sea level on the Wildenburger Kopf hill overlooking the Idarbach valley. It was the highest castle in the Hunsrück region.

Only a few remnants of the upper castle, perched atop a rocky outcrop, remain. A 22-meter-high observation tower was built on the summit of the rock, starting in 1980 and completed in 1981. From its 15-meter-high viewing platform, which is arranged in a ring around the tower, it offers excellent panoramic views. Orientation panels on the parapet explain the points of interest.

The spiral staircase and the covered viewing platform are constructed of concrete and are very stable, therefore there is little risk of vertigo.

... (Unfortunately, Komoot has combined the observation tower, the restaurant, and the wildlife enclosure into one highlight!)
