A romantic birch avenue with old wayside shrines leads from Bad Königshofen through the meadows of the Saale to Ipthausen. The pretty little church, which was rebuilt between 1746 and 1754 in the Rococo style, is considered "one of the most beautiful village churches in Franconia". The quiet little church owes its great popularity above all to the magnificent ceiling painting by Georg Anton Urlaub, which unmistakably reveals the influence of the famous Venetian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. The Ipthausen miraculous image, a Pietà from around 1650, which is rather simple amidst the lavish Rococo furnishings, is still the destination of many individual pilgrims and groups of visitors today. The type of the Sorrowful Mother in particular invites people to bring up personal needs, worries and pains here in order to leave strengthened and full of hope.
