Absolutely fantastic city! You feel hundreds of years back in time ... If it weren't for all the cars ...: - /

Wildbad Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Highlight • Historical Site

The Wildbad is a conference venue in Rothenburg o.d.T.
This is not a luxury hotel (although the garden and the ambience of the building would allow for that) but a non-profit educational facility of the Protestant church, which is happy to accommodate private guests at very reasonable prices.
The hotel is located outside the city walls, somewhat "hidden" behind a small wall. If you drive along the city wall (outside), you will see a small parking lot on the left. There are various signs here indicating that there is no public road from there. But you can safely drive on by car and then reach the conference venue, where there are also plenty of parking spaces.

Later you come into the city via a wide staircase with around 200 steps - so you don't have to walk back the entire way you came by car, but you can take a shortcut via the stairs and then you are right in front of the city gate.

The grounds and buildings really look like something out of a fairy tale and you feel like you have been invited to a castle - even if the building is not a restored castle.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber Market Square

Highlight • Historical Site

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is world-renowned for its historic old town, so well and completely preserved that one can truly experience the Middle Ages there. The market square forms the heart of the town. From here, one can admire the impressive facades of the surrounding houses. In winter, one of Germany's most famous and oldest Christmas markets takes place here and in the surrounding alleyways: the Rothenburg Reiterlesmarkt.

View of Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Highlight • Viewpoint

There are many places from which you have a great view of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, but I find the view of the medieval town, with its unique silhouette and towers, most beautiful from the Tauber Valley or from Engelsburg Castle.

Schrozberg Castle

Highlight • Castle

After the destruction of the Schrozburg in 1441, the moated castle was built on the Vorbach. The three-wing complex with the old building in the south and the Berlichinger tower in the inner courtyard dates from the 15th to 16th centuries. The construction of the castle took about 100 years. Even Götz von Berlichingen is said to have spent some time there in his youth. The west wing and the round corner tower were added in 1625, and the east wing was added in the 18th century. The courtyard, which is open to the north, merges into the palace gardens laid out in 1701. There is a beautifully landscaped box garden in front of the castle. At that time, control of the castle was not assigned to a noble family, as was usual, but divided between the lords of Schrozberg, Adelsheim, Seldeneck, Rothenburg, Berlichingen and Hohenlohe. Ownership of Schrozberg Castle has changed several times over the years among these families.

The municipality of Schrozberg bought and renovated the castle in 1948. Today the city administration is housed in the castle. There is also a dental practice and other cultural spaces, also for the public. Exhibitions, theater performances and concerts take place there, for example.

The Tauber is a river in southern Germany on both sides of the border between Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. It rises at the western foot of the Frankenhöhe, flows in a north-westerly direction through the Franconia region and flows into the Main from the left and south-east in Wertheim.
