La Petite-Pierre

Highlight • Settlement

At the foot of the Northern Vosges lies the pleasant little town of La Petite-Pierre. From there, there is an extensive view of the forested mountains. This colorful town is very charming with its half-timbered houses, but it is small. It is said to have just over 600 inhabitants. There are around ten restaurants there. The Hôtel des Vosges deserves a special mention: it offers a breathtaking view of the wooded valley and the Lützelstein castle.

On the slope below La Petite-Pierre stands this extraordinary, castle-like house – almost like something out of a fairy tale.

Even though it’s not a real castle, it’s located in an area with an impressive history: for centuries, La Petite-Pierre was a strategically important fortress between Alsace and Lorraine.

High above the valley sits the Château de La Petite-Pierre, whose origins date back to the 12th century and was later expanded into a fortress by Vauban.

The slopes around the village were once characterized by craftsmen, forest workers, and small businesses – many buildings were later rebuilt or newly constructed in the “castle-like” style.

Today, this spot is a real insider tip: perfect view, quiet location, and an almost magical atmosphere between forest, rocks, and history.

Above fortress, below cistern. Somehow it is more impressive from below.

Château de La Petite Pierre

Highlight • Castle

Lützelstein Castle was built at the end of the 12th century by Count Hugo, a son of Count Hugo of Blieskastel. It later belonged to the Electorate of the Palatinate. You can walk through the moat and there is a small shop in the tourist information office with products from the region.

Hinsbourg Campsite

Highlight • Other

A very nice, small campsite in interesting surroundings. There is everything you need for a short stay. The only minus is the lack of a store nearby.
