Saint-Hilarion Church of Duravel

Highlight • Religious Site

The origin of the church dates back to 1055. Built at the end of the 11th century, the building was damaged on several occasions, notably in 1369 during the siege of Duravel, then during the Wars of Religion. At that time, the vault of the nave as well as the northern apsidiole were demolished then rebuilt in the style of the end of the 15th century. The intact parts dating back to the origin are: the crypt, the apse, the transept, the first floor of the bell tower and the south apsidiole. The capitals are decorated in a naive way, with foliage or symbolic figures. In the south apsidiole are scenes representing the tortures of hell and those of purgatory. Others depict the happiness of the elect and the joys of paradise. In the apse are representations of biblical characters and religious scenes. The first floor of the bell tower, which rises above the crossing of the transept, is pierced on each side by a series of four arcades whose semicircular arches fall on small columns with carved capitals. In 1898, the nave was raised to free it entirely from the aisles. This elevation was then carried out in the choir and the transept.
