Jean Bart Statue

Highlight • Monument

Place Jean Bart is a square in the northern French port city of Dunkirk. This location in the city center owes its name to Dunkirk privateer Jan Baert (French name: Jean Bart). A statue of the latter seafarer by sculptor David d'Angers (1845) stands in the center of the square. There is a paid parking lot under Place Jean Bart with space for approximately 400 vehicles.

Leughenaer Tower

Highlight • Monument

The Tower of the Leughenaer is a 15th-century fortress tower in the French city of Dunkirk. It is the oldest monument in the city. The tower is octagonal and 30 meters high. It was built by Jacques Desfontaines and was used as a beacon for shipping. Much of the technical 19th century equipment in the tower has been preserved. The tower contained a means of communication, namely a semaphore or a chappe as the French call it. From 1825 to 1963 the tower served as a lighthouse. It was alleged that false signals were deliberately given from the tower to beach ships and plunder them. That explains the name of the tower. It is more likely that ships crashed due to the difficult to navigate, winding access channel. The tower is protected and classified as a monument historique on 10-01-1995.
