St. Agnes Church, Eschbach

Highlight • Religious Site

The first St. Agnes church is today's cemetery chapel. The early Romanesque bell tower probably dates from the 11th century. During excavations at the end of the 19th century, remains of the Romanesque nave from the 10th or 11th century were unearthed. In the 13th century, the arched windows were rebuilt into Gothic windows, and the choir and the sacristy room were added. In 1468 the building was first assigned to Saint Agnes of Rome. In 1517 the church was renovated and the walls painted, as can still be seen in the choir today. From the 17th century, she was dilapidated, was collapsing, so they had to be supported.
In 1885, construction began on the new St. Agnes Church, which was consecrated in 1888. In the same year, the long house of the old parish church was demolished, the tower and choir should follow, because the community spared the cost of maintenance. However, the building authority considered the tower to be worth preserving, and so the municipality negotiated with the Baden state that it would pay for the upkeep of the tower and that it would receive the choir. Thus, the cemetery was allowed to remain at this point and the former choir now serves as a cemetery chapel. At times he was also used by the Protestant community.

Eschbacher Castell

Highlight • Historical Site

The most striking building in Eschbach is the noble house from the 14th century. It is a three-story mansion 🏛️ with a towering structure that can be seen from afar. From 1795 it was operated as an inn under the name Zum Löwen.

During renovation measures in 1999, renovation and extension phases came to light, as well as the former tower of the “Brennerin”. The noble house was named Eschbacher Castell. The historic building has been the municipality's town hall since December 2018.
