Brézé Castle

Highlight • Other

Classified as a "Grand site du Val de Loire", the Château de Brézé is a unique historical monument built between the 11th and 19th centuries. The castle stands proudly in a magnificent neo-Gothic style, but it is actually beneath the surface that the building's particularity lies, since it houses an entire underground network that constitutes a real fortress hidden under the rock. Initially built to protect against Viking invasions, the fortress has one of the deepest dry moats in Europe. Under the castle, there is a 3 km network of tunnels and rooms. These were in a way the first protective bunkers known in history, and housed bakeries, stables, dormitories, kitchens, a barrel room and even a silkworm farm.

Bike paths flow through the beautiful park that sits besides the Thouet. Nice spot for a lunchbreak or a way to leave Saumur traffic free.

Historic Center of Saumur

Highlight • Historical Site

The historic city is located between the Loire and Thouet rivers, and is surrounded by the vineyards of Saumur itself, Chinon, Bourgueil, Coteaux du Layon, etc. which produce some of France's finest wines.

Amongst the most important monuments of Saumur are the great Château de Saumur itself which stands high above the town, and the nearby Château de Beaulieu which stands just 200 metres from the south bank of the Loire river and which was designed by the architect Jean Drapeau. A giant sequoia tree (which is protected) stands in the grounds of Château de Beaulieu. The Dolmen de Bagneux is on the old road going south.

The architectural character of the town owes much to the fact that it is constructed almost exclusively of the beautiful, but fragile, Tuffeau stone.[10]

The wine industry surrounds Saumur, many utilising the tunnels as cellars with the hundreds of domaines producing white, red, rosé and sparkling wines. Visits to producers and the annual Grandes Tablées du Saumur-Champigny is a popular annual event held in early August with over 1 km of tables set up in Saumur so people can sample the local foods and wine.[11]

Saumur has a famous weekly market every Saturday morning with hundreds of stalls open for business in the streets and squares of the old town, from before 8am.

Its skyline has been compared with that of Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.

There are heaps of restaurants for every budget, musuems, cafes, bars, galleries and a theatre. There is also a tank museum and the Cadre Noir cavalry centre.

Château de Saumur

Highlight • Castle

Symbol of the city of Saumur which it dominates, "Château d'Amour" resting on its "emerald rock" for René I of Anjou, it is an old fortress transformed into a palace by the Dukes of Anjou (14th and 15th centuries). It then became the residence of the governors of the city, a prison, then a weapons and munitions depot. In 1906, the City bought the castle from the State to install its municipal museum there. The surrounding park offers a magnificent view of the city and the Loire.
