In 1870 the Belgian state bought the Wortel colony. They housed male "vagrants" and "beggars" who worked under supervision in the countryside and in workhouses.

Today there are no more "vagrants". The colony has been a protected landscape area since 1999 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021.
