Genenbos Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Only recently, in March 2022, the brand new bridge was opened to traffic. On a structurally separated bike path, it is wonderful to ride over the Albert Canal.

Definitely a nice place in summer and when the weather is nice.
Somehow it looked too bad or is currently being renovated.

With the 250-metre track, which meets UCI standards, Flanders can organize track cycling European Championships and World Championships. There are 1000 permanent seats in the stands. There is room for 1650 people in the central square. By means of mobile grandstands, the capacity can be expanded by 1000 people.

Hermitage of Bolderberg

Highlight • Religious Site

Lambert Hoelen, a pious man from Zolder, went on a pilgrimage to Rome and Loreto (Italy) in 1670 and 1672. According to tradition, this is where the house of Mary stands, which the di Angeli family had brought over from the Holy Land. Lambert Hoelen was so impressed by the simplicity of this holy house that he wanted to rebuild it himself when he returned home. Ferdinand, Count zu Inhausen und Kniphausen, Baron of the Free Land of Vogelsanck and Lord of Zolder, granted Lambert Hoelen permission on 16 January 1673 to build a hermitage and chapel within his country on the highest point of the region, namely on the top of the Bolderberg in Zolder, “in accordance with the form and greeting” of the holy house of Mary in Loreto. Lambert Hoelen became the first hermit of Bolderberg. He had twelve followers until 1880.
The hermitage and the chapel became a popular place of pilgrimage. On 15 May 1679, Pope Innocent XI ratified the establishment of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Loreto on the Bolderberg by means of a papal bull.

Mangelbeek Bend at Ubbersel

Highlight • River

The Mangelbeek is a 24 km long tributary of the Demer in the Belgian province of Limburg. She crosses the landscape from east to west. Especially in the eastern part, where the stream flows from the Kempen Plateau, the stream is very rich in iron and has a rusty brown color. At the beginning of the 20th century, the stream was straightened and weirs were constructed in the stream.
The Mangelbeek originates on the Kempen Plateau in Helchteren, at an altitude of approximately 76 m, and continues via Lillo to Zolder. Along the way she gets water from the Schansbeemdenbeek, the Laambeek and the Berkenbosbeek.
