Castle of Gors

Highlight • Castle

First of all, there is the actual castle, a mansard-roof mansion, in which elements of the building from 1744 can still be found. Then there are the two parallel service buildings, remnants of the former court yard, which date from the second half of the 18th century. A coach house was added in the second quarter of the 19th century.

Widooie Castle

Highlight • Castle

Just outside the village center of Widooie, on Kasteelweg, lies the beautifully preserved Widooie Castle: a secluded castle farm with deep historical roots. Four wings surrounding a rectangular courtyard form a harmonious whole, with marlstone bands, ornate wall anchors, and a stately gate dating from 1662 where the coat of arms of Richard Vaes still proudly stands. The corner tower, the classically renovated residential wing, and the 17th-century barns together tell the story of a place where generations have come and gone for centuries.

Floating Chapel of Helshoven

Highlight • Monument

At the highest point of Helshoven, you can now enjoy a breathtaking view over the Haspengouw landscape. Artist Frits Jeuris has created a unique work of art from dozens of felled fruit trees from the area.

“Helsh(ea)ven”, a wooden work of art consisting of 90 standard cherry trees, each fifty years old, was hit by the cherry plague virus at the end of 2016, a contagious plant disease that causes small fruits on cherries. Now the felled trees are getting a second life. The work of art symbolizes the dynamic landscape of Haspengouw.

Rijkel Castle

Highlight • Castle

Originally it was a farm, then a castle or fortress. The oldest part is the east wing dating from the 16th century. It was conceived as a late Gothic mansion with stepped gables. In the course of the 17th century, the whole was expanded into a U-shaped water castle, with 3 corner towers. Further adjustments followed during the 18th century, including the removal of the drawbridge in 1785. After Marie Thiribu died in 1831, the castle stood empty for 100 years! After some repairs in 1939, the building was protected in 1942. In 1966 the northwest corner tower collapsed. With the reconstruction of that tower in 1972, a complete restoration started.
