Little Nete

Highlight • River

The Kleine Nete is a tributary of the Nete in the Scheldt catchment area.
The river arises from many streams fed by rain and Meuse water (originating from irrigation) in the area between Arendonk, Retie and Mol-Postel in the Belgian Kempen, including the so-called Zeven Neten: the Looiendse Neet, the Klein Neetje, the Zwarte Neet, Nuns Neetje, the Desselse Neet (also Werbeekse Neet), the Plas Nete, the White Neet.
The Kleine Nete contains many fish that are very rare in Flanders. From Lier it flows together with the Great Nete and forms the Nete or the Beneden Nete.
Its main tributaries are the Molenbeek, the Aa and the Wamp.
The Kleine Nete flows through the following municipalities: Retie, Mol, Kasterlee, Geel, Olen, Herentals, Vorselaar, Grobbendonk, Nijlen, Zandhoven, Ranst and Lier.

Third Lock on the Kleine Nete

Highlight • Monument

The Derde Sas in Grobbendonk is an old and dilapidated lock from the 19th century, when the Nete (channeled in 1843) was still heavily used by sand and iron ore ships. The lock is located on a dead side arm of the Kleine Nete. The lock used to be located on the Nete, but over time the course of the Nete was shifted and the lock became obsolete. This lock was one of the four locks on the Kleine Nete between Lier and Grobbendonk. Until recently, Lia Timmermans, daughter of writer Felix Timmermans, stayed in the 'Sashuis', now restored as a country residence.

Lock on the Kleine Nete

Highlight • Monument

The third lock on the Kleine Nete dates from the period when many sand and iron ore ships still sailed via this river to and from the Noorderkempen. In order to make the waterway accessible to larger ships, the Kleine Nete was canalised from Lier between 1837 and 1843. However, the canalisation was only carried out as far as Herentals. Four locks were built on the Kleine Nete between Lier and Grobbendonk and a house for the lock keeper was provided at each lock. Where the cycle bridge is located, you can discover remains of the old lock 3 on the other side. After the construction of the Nete Canal, the Kleine Nete, and therefore also Lock 3, fell into disuse. The fairly well-preserved lock chamber is finished with walls of natural stone. You can still see the notches to mark the water level. The lock house from the mid-19th century was restored and serves as a holiday home.
