Prof. Ornstein - Oosterkade

Highlight • Monument

Leonard Ornstein was a prominent Dutch physicist who taught in Utrecht and made important contributions to physics—particularly with the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, which is now used in mathematics and physics to describe random developments. Although highly respected scientifically, he was ousted from his position during the Nazi era and died in 1941. In honor of his work, a laboratory in Utrecht now bears his name.

Singing cycle path

Highlight • Cycleway

Many cyclists would like to sing, but feel some hesitation to actually do so. Fietsersbond columnist/artist Mapije therefore devised a solution in 2013: a singing cycle path. You can now find singing bike paths in Dongenvaart, Drimmelen, Houten, Almere, Amstelveen, Lansingerland, Zoetermeer, Leiden and Hierden.

The very first Zangfietspad was an experiment by Mapije on a bicycle path in Amsterdam. She has put up a sign that says you can sing well. “A lot of people smile when they see the sign,” Mapije said. And some cast off the trepidation and actually start to 'sing exuberantly'.
