Former Synagogue Kobersdorf and Memorial
Highlight • Castle
Moved past:
Hans von Weisspriach converted the outer bailey into a Renaissance-style castle. The Weisspriach family died out in 1553; the dominion was increasingly divided among the heirs. Unclear ownership and debts led to a decline in the once magnificent court life at Kobersdorf: the castle became a robbers' headquarters, a counterfeit money mint, and in 1599 even the scene of a crime when a peasant woman was burned at the stake in the middle of the castle courtyard as a supposed witch.
Synagogue and Memorial Kobersdorf:
After the war, the former synagogue was left to decay for decades. Restoration began in 1976. In 2019, the state of Burgenland bought the synagogue and intends to use it as a venue and memorial after renovation. The memorial was inaugurated in September 2017 and is intended to commemorate the former Jewish residents of Kobersdorf who were expelled in 1938.
