Church of Saints Peter and Paul of Agrò

Highlight • Religious Site

Near the small village of Casalvecchio Siculo lies in the Torrental Torró a very complex monument of the High Middle Ages in Sicily. The Greek inscription on the architrave of the main portal states that the church was rebuilt by the master builder Gerhard the Frank in 1172 on behalf of the catechumens Theosteriktos. The Norman Roger II had it built in 1116. The church miraculously unites Byzantine, Norman and Arabic architectural elements. until 1776 Greek orthodox Basilian monks lived here in a tiny abbey.
Inside, in the small and narrow church, high pointed arches on monolithic pillars separate three ships from each other. On the main axis of the central nave are the two very different domes, which allow light from above and give the church something mystical. A beautiful place.
I would like to point out to the picnic area below the monastery, where we spent a nice lunch break directly on the Torrente leading in spring water.

From here you can admire a glimpse of the panorama that embraces the Strait of Messina up to the Calabrian coast, from Mount Etna to the landscape of Savoca. But looking at the town, one is even more amazed by the precious medieval village, with the narrow streets that follow one another and intersect between the Spanish and Arab architectures.
