Highlight • Beach

Lu Bagnu is one of the rare sandy portions of the Castellano coast, which is mostly characterized by high red trachyte cliffs. Lu Bagnu beach, located about two and a half kilometers from Castelsardo, offers suggestive scenery and a pleasant oasis of tranquility.

The Church of Tergu

Highlight • Religious Site

Tergu is a small Italian town of about 600 inhabitants in the province of Sassari (Sardinia).
Agriculture is the prevalent activity. The most important event is surely the celebration in honor of Our Lady of Tergu, with sacred and profane celebrations of typical Sardinian songs and dances in the streets. The typical handicraft production in the country is the processing of wicker baskets with dwarf palm trees.
Of great interest in the territory of Tergu is the Romanesque church of "Our Lady of Tergu".
The church is on the outskirts of the modern town, on the site of the ancient Roman settlement of Cericum. Here it stood in the Middle Ages the most important Benedictine monastery in Anglona (ancient sub-region of Sardinia), depending directly from Montecassino.
Only ruins remain of the abbey, while the church of Santa Maria (or Our Lady) of Tergu which was attached to it, is intact.
The building, consecrated in 1117, was built using red trachyte for the general structure and clear limestone for the decorations, creating a pleasing contrast of colors, according to Pisan models of the second half of the XII century.
The facade (where the pediment collapsed, over time) is very graceful: it is divided into two parts: the lower one shows three large blind arcades; in the central one the architraved portal is overhung by an arc that alternates volcanic blocks with limestone ones. At the top, a false loggia of five Lombard bands is supported by four columns, two of them zigzagging, and houses various inlaid panels and a small rose window in the center.
At North the church is dominated by a massive square bell tower
The interior shows a "crux commissa" (that is Tau Cross) plan and has and has a single bare and austere nave.
