Sint-Annapark Maldegem

Highlight • Parking

Large park area with many walking and cycling paths, playground equipment. You can relax there for a few hours. Apparently also popular with the students in their study period who look for the coolness and shade.

Chapel 'The Flight into Egypt'

Highlight • Religious Site

This devotional chapel in honor of Mary was built in 1989 and is owned by the Association of Parochial Works in Oedelem. It is an accessible chapel in brick masonry. Above the arched doorway we see on a built-in tile the construction date and also a scene representing the "Flight to Egypt". In both side walls, the window opening shows "stained glass" illuminating the chapel. One window shows Mary, Jesus and Joseph in their "Flight to Egypt", the other shows the burning heart of Christ. On the altar is a statue of Mary with baby Jesus. The chapel is furnished with some older church chairs.

Chapel on Weg naar Sint-Kruis

Highlight • Religious Site

This chapel is located in a small grove. There used to be a statue of Saint Joseph inside on the altar, now there is a simple statue of Mary.

The chapel was built by Mr. and Mrs. Leon Raes in 1908. Whether this is the original chapel or if it was (according to some sources) much larger at first, there is no definite answer. The chapel was sold in 1973. After the sale in 1973, the chapel was no longer maintained and it is now unfortunately in a very dilapidated condition.

Beverhoutsveld Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

The Veldkapel (Field Chapel) or Beverhoutsveldkapel (Beverhout Field Chapel) is a chapel near Moerbrugge. The Marian Chapel is located on the corner of Veldstraat and Beverhoutstraat, on the border of Oedelem and Oostkamp.

It is a neo-Gothic chapel under a slate gable roof. At the front is a large door flanked by two blind windows. There are two windows along each side. The rear is rounded. Atop the chapel stands a small bell tower at the front and a cross at the back. The door and windows are painted reddish brown.

Inside stands a large statue of the Virgin Mary on a wooden pedestal. Below this stands a bench for offerings (flowers, candles) and thanksgiving. There is also an iron candlestick and about ten prayer chairs.

A narrow path surrounds the chapel. The chapel is surrounded by several trees. A picnic table now stands in the grassy area behind the chapel, offering a beautiful view of the Beverhout Field.

This memorial was erected on September 11, 1994 to commemorate the Battle of Moerbrugge, which killed 52 Canadian soldiers, more than 100 German soldiers and 12 Belgian civilians in September 1944. The monument from 1949 was integrated into a peace monument in 2018 and is a listed building.

The sculpture was made from an M10 Wolverine tank destroyer, which was disassembled on site and transformed into a work of art. One plaque bears the names of civilian casualties and another bears the names of fallen Canadians.

If you do want to cross the canal Bruges to Gent, there are few opportunities. This bridge allows you to make a link to a variety of other tours on the other side of the canal. There is a mobile home parking area just in front of the bridge on the side of Beernem.
