Großsteinbach Village Center

Highlight • Settlement

An endearing community with charm and hospitable residents! Every year around Easter, many visitors make a pilgrimage to the Chess Flower World nature reserve and in summer the leisure center at the chess flower ponds offers wonderful hours for the whole family.
In the center there is a small shop, a bakery and a cafe / restaurant, but there is also a lot to discover, e.g. a stork nest, a sculpture park, ...

Landscape Chess Großsteinbach

Highlight • Monument

Under the title "Landscape Chess" in the chess flower community of Großsteinbach, a chess field modeled on the chessboard pattern of the flower was initially built in the center based on designs by Anne and Peter Knoll: 32 brick squares and 32 meadow squares planted with white clover.
The landscape chess blends seamlessly into the environment and is intended to symbolize the interlinking of art and population.

The small sundial of the Emperor Augustus in Großsteinbach is beautifully designed on this meadow with large Roman numerals made of wood and plant beds, the pointer rising into the sky casts its shadow and shows the time, impressive!

It is not possible to determine exactly how the chess flower, popularly known as "Red Glock'n", came to the region in such large numbers. Perhaps a holdover from the ice age, or the seeds were carried from the monastery gardens in Herberstein to Großsteinbach.

Fritillaria meleagris, originally a riparian forest plant, has conquered a habitat in man-made meadow types. It thrives on soils that are not too poor in nutrients (meso- to eutrophic) in the area of litter meadows and forage meadows (pipe grass meadows and smooth oat meadows). By plowing and fertilizing the meadows, the large amount was minimized. That is why the country started a rescue operation for the remaining 2 meadows, which have been protected since 1966.
Only traditional cultivation methods can ensure the survival of this plant in our region. The fertilization required for the nutrient supply must consist of natural fertilizer. Drainage and artificial fertilizers are the trigger for the extinction of the population.

Großsteinbach is the only region in Styria that is home to chess flowers. There are around 80 plants on 25 square meters that bloom around Easter.

For the numerous visitors: look and take pictures! Do not pick or dig flowers.
