Did you know that this pond was dug to provide water for steam trains from Torhout to Ostend? It is therefore no coincidence that it is located along the green axis 'Groene 62', a former steam railway route that extends from Torhout to Ostend.

In the spring of 2022, the landscape park was renovated to respond even more to the silent experience of nature. Among other things, a covered rest point for cyclists and natural play elements for children ensure that the park is a perfect stopover while cycling!

In addition, it is also the ideal place to rest, walk or go fishing and of course enjoy nature.

Facilities on the domain:
- public toilet
- natural play elements
- bicycle storage
- picnic area (also covered)

The Käthe Kollwitz Museum in Koekelare is a museum dedicated to the German artist Käthe Kollwitz, her son Peter and her work. In the museum you can learn more about Peter, a young German WWI front soldier who was killed on the day of his arrival in Diksmuide. To deal with her grief, his mother Käthe made two sculptures of grieving parents (‘The Grieving Parent Couple’). This masterpiece is now on the German military cemetery of Vladslo and is well worth a visit.
The museum not only highlights Käthe Kollwitz as an artist, but also as a strong woman and (grieving) mother. The common thread running through the exhibition is her indictment of the fact that children are the main victims of war. There is also a unique collection of works by this expressionist German artist.
The museum is located at Sint-Maartensplein 15B in Koekelare and is open from Tuesday to Sunday. The ticket is valid for both the Käthe Kollwitz Museum and the Fransmansmuseum.

Vladslo German War Cemetery

Highlight • Historical Site

VLADSO was originally a GERMAN BROADSTATION (a first aid post).
Upon entering, this cemetery appears small, yet more than 25,600 fallen German soldiers are buried here in a comrades' grave.
A German first aid post was originally established on this site after the First Battle of the Yser. Consequently, the first fallen soldiers were buried here as early as October 1914. By the end of the war, the cemetery held more than 3,000 fallen soldiers.
After the war, many German cemeteries scattered behind the front line were consolidated into four cemeteries. Vladso is one of them.
The cemetery is overlooked by the "Grieving Parents," created by Käthe Kollwitz. They are looking at the comrades' grave where their 18-year-old son, Peter Kollwitz, is buried—I believe in the ninth row. Peter died on October 23, 1914.

Yet another place to reflect on. This display gives a face to war and evokes feelings for loved ones who never returned… Touching.
