Church of Santo Stefano

Highlight • Religious Site

Chiesa pattocchiale di S. Stefano – Villa Pagani, Torre
Church of St. Stefano
The old church of Santo Stefano (12th century) was rebuilt in 1732 after a fire. It still preserves some parts of the primitive construction to the north, where, next to the side entrance, there are fragments of 15th century frescoes (Inventory of Art and Antiquities 1. "the three upper valleys", edited by Piero Bianconi, Grassi Publishing House Bellinzona 1948).

The Romanesque bell tower is the most slender and slender in the canton of Ticino, with its 5 shelves clearly divided by a jagged frieze (Arte in val di Blenio, Piero Bianconi 1944). It is a 12th century bell tower. If we look carefully, in the south corner a sculpture appears, destroyed by time, inserted during the construction works: a water drain that looks like a gargoyle, an animalistic and fantastic figure (article on the region of 20/08/2012).
Inside we find a statue of the Madonna, canvas with the Deposition (17th century), panels of the Annunciation (16th century), paintings by Emilio Ferrazzini from 1937, a tear of a votive fresco with the Madonna and Child from the house of the Peduzzi and various works from the 17th and 18th centuries. A hundred meters away is the Casa Baltera, where on the façade you can see the Madonna del latte of 1495.

Blenio–Lucomagno Cycle Route 36

Highlight • Cycleway

Percorso Blenio–Lucomagno No. 36
Through the sun-drenched Valle di Blenio, steeply up to the Passo del Lucomagno, one of the most beautiful pass landscapes in Switzerland. Along the reservoir into the Val Medel, alpine roses in the valley and roaring water in the Hell's Gorge, the destination is Disentis.
The starting point is Biasca, the center of the Ambrosian valleys of Leventina, Riviera and Blenio. Vast chestnut forests spread out on the lower slopes of the Brenno valley; the chestnuts, once the "poor man's fruit", are now often left lying around. Emperor Barbarossa once stayed at the Seravalle castle in front of Ludiano; ruins still bear witness to its former power.
In the sun-drenched valley, agriculture is practiced on the terraces. High up, alone on an alpine meadow, stands one of the most impressive Romanesque buildings in Ticino, the church of San Carlo di Negrentino with its beautiful frescoes. Butterflies swing up the mountain with us, the scenery changes, in the quiet Alpine valley of Santa Maria the firs smell of resin, the tinkling of cows accompanies you to the Passo del Lucomagno.
After the Lukmanier we go along the reservoir into the Val Medel, where fragrant alpine roses, tanned wooden houses and roaring water in the Höllenschlucht accompany us to Disentis.

A kind of monument dedicated to the "head" of one of the machines used to dig the Gotthard tunnel. The tunnel connects the Canton of Ticino to the Canton of Uri.
